The measurement system is based on the observation that ageing roads both sound louder and cause stronger vibrations. Several characteristic wavelengths can be distinguished in the road surface: from ravelling and small potholes to undulation of the road on a larger scale. The vibration and noise measurements are combined and shifted in the frequency domain according to the speed of the vehicle. Anyone who has accidentally driven over the rumble strip of a motorway knows this phenomenon: the pitch clearly changes as you drive slower or faster. The relation is frequency = speed / (3.6 × length), with the frequency in hertz, the speed in km/h and the wavelength in metres.
